The first slot machines didn’t always pay winners in cash. In fact, the bar owners who housed these machines was at liberty to award prizes however he/she saw fit, most often in the form of free beer or cigars.

That's an interesting piece of history! I think it's pretty cool that the first slot machines didn't necessarily pay out in cash, but rather in other forms of rewards like free drinks or cigars. As for me, I think I'd prefer to receive my winnings in the form of free concert tickets hahaha
