America's First Interracial Casino Opened in 1955
Like a lot of the United States in the 1950s, Las Vegas was an awfully racist place. How racist was it? At one hotel, legendary Black singer Sammy Davis Jr. broke the rules and swam in the pool, so the management drained it. At another, they allowed Black torch singer Lorna Dorne to perform and even spend the night, but they burned her bedding and towels the next morning.
So when the interracial Moulin Rouge casino and hotel opened on May 24, 1955, in the predominantly Black part of town, it was an historical occasion, with dancers from the Rouge landing on the cover of Life magazine within a month. Unfortunately, the white owners mysteriously shut the place down after only four and a half months in operation, but the Moulin Rouge had a surprisingly peaceful and profitable run.
