The only realistic way to find a new planet for colonizing is to visit that planet. You can only learn so much from pictures and things like that via a telescope.

Colonizing the galaxy is not easy. It's not like packing your bags and moving to another country. It's more like packing your bags and moving to another continent, except that continent is millions of light-years away and has no air, water, or life. Oh, and you also have to deal with deadly radiation, extreme temperatures, and hostile aliens (if they exist).
